How do I fragment (frag) coral on the AWTS mobile app?

Scan a broodstock, scan the new fragments and register a fragging event on the Australian Wildlife Traceability System (AWTS) mobile app.

Fragmenting (fragging) coral records that you have cut new fragments from a broodstock colony. You scan the broodstock before fragmentation, then scan the resulting fragments, and the Australian Wildlife Traceability System (AWTS) links each fragment to its broodstock. You start from the Frag Coral tile on the Home screen.

Scan the broodstock

On the Home screen, tap Frag Coral. The Frag coral screen opens with the instruction 'Press button on your device to scan broodstock before fragmentation', a Target source code toggle (C / W), an empty Scanned items list with a RESCAN button, and a greyed-out Next: Scan fragments button.

  1. Set the Target source code toggle to C (Captive-bred) or W (Wild). This classifies the resulting fragments and decides which measurements and photos are required.

  2. Scan the broodstock tag. It appears in Scanned items with a generation indicator (for example, 'RFID.99910231923102931 (P)' or '(F1)'), and Next: Scan fragments button becomes active.

  3. Optionally, tap the broodstock item to add measurements or a photo.

What measurements and photos are required depends on the target source code and the broodstock generation, see What measurements and photos are required when fragging (source code C vs W)?

Scan the fragments

Tap Next: Scan fragments. You will then be asked what will happen to the boodstock with two options that records whether the broodstock colony survives the fragmentation:

  • Take piece: a fragment is cut from the broodstock and the broodstock colony remains intact.

  • Divide into frags: the broodstock is fully split into fragments, so the original colony no longer exists as it was.

You can proceed to scan the fragments and may be required to add a photo, measurements, and/or notes for each fragment.

If the photo and weight icons beside the coral are red, you must add the details, if they are green, it is ok to proceed. The Register Coral button will only display as green and be clickable once all fragments have the required photo and measurement data added (and the icons are all green).

What measurements and photos are required depends on the target source code and the fragment generation, see What measurements and photos are required when fragging (source code C vs W)?

Finalise and save

Tap Register coral. The data is saved to the AWTS and a confirmation notification appears at the bottom of the Home Screen (for example, 'Batch registered!' in green), with a dismiss (×) button.

What gets saved

Each fragment is saved with a unique identifier (UID) matching its tag, the Fisher (your participant organisation), the Location (your default location), the Species and Variety inherited from the broodstock, a link to the broodstock, and a generation value set automatically (for example, 'F1' if the broodstock was 'P'). You can view it on the web app in the Product List or via the View Coral action in the mobile app.

Error messages you may see

If an action cannot be completed, the AWTS mobile app shows a short message. Here is what the messages you are most likely to see when fragging mean, and what to do.

Message

What it means and what to do

'Coral not found in system'

The broodstock tag is not registered. You cannot fragment a specimen that was never tagged. Register it with Tag Coral first.

'Broodstock already divided into fragments'

This parent has already been fully fragmented and cannot be used again.

'Please fill in all required fields (marked with *) before proceeding'

Complete the photo and measurement fields marked with a red asterisk, then continue.
