How do I add a Location?

Add a Location with the Create New Location form: name and address, identifiers, location types and an optional boundary.

You add a Location to the registry so it can be used in Events, Orders, Evidence and Movements. Every supply-chain event is tied to a Location, so add one whenever a Location you need is not already in the registry. You add it with the Create New Location form, which is the same wherever you open it.

Where to add a Location

You can open the Create New Location form from several places:

  • From a participant: open the participant, go to its Locations tab and click Add location. The Location is added for that participant.

  • From the Locations list: go to Ecosystem Registries > Locations and click Add location.

  • While adding a participant: in the Locations step of the Add participant drawer, click Create a new one, or use Find an existing location to link an existing Location by its ID.

  • From a form: for example while creating an Order, when the Location you need is not found.

You can also add Locations through the API. See How do I access OriginsNext API documentation?

Complete the Create New Location form

The Create New Location form has these sections:

  • Name and address: the Location's name and address.

  • Identification: one or more identifiers used to recognise the Location across registries and trading partners. Choose the ID type, for example GLN or CAR, and enter the ID. Use + Add another ID to add more.

  • Location type: choose one or more types, for example Farm, Mine, Mill, Warehouse or Port. Types help with reporting and filtering.

  • Polygons (optional): the Location's boundary, described below.

Click Save and close. The new Location is then available in search fields straight away.

Note: If you create a Location for another organisation, such as a participant, your organisation is recorded as its creator and that organisation is its owner. Who can then see or edit the Location, and view its boundary, depends on how it relates to each party. See Why can't I see another organisation's Location or its boundaries?

Polygons (optional)

In the Polygons section you can upload the Location's boundary as one or more polygons. Drag and drop or browse for a file up to 20 MB, in GeoJSON or a CAR-formatted ZIP (CAR is the Cadastro Ambiental Rural, Brazil's rural environmental registry). A preview is shown so you can check the polygons before you save.

You do not have to add the boundary now. You can add boundaries later from the Location's details with Manage boundaries and + Add boundary, choosing a Boundary type such as Main boundary.

For boundary files and adding boundaries later, see How do I add a Location's boundary polygon?
