A Location can include its physical boundary as one or more polygons (its mapped shape). Boundaries appear on the map on the Location's Overview tab and can be shared with other organisations, for example on an Order. You can add a boundary when you create the Location, in the Polygons section of the Create New Location form, or later from the Location's details with Manage boundaries.
Add a boundary when you create the Location
To add a boundary while you create a Location:
Start adding a Location, for example from Ecosystem Registries > Locations or from a participant's Locations tab.
In the Polygons section, drag and drop or browse for your boundary file.
Check the preview of the polygons on the map.
Complete the rest of the form and click Save and close.
Add a boundary later
You can add boundaries to a Location that already exists:
Go to Ecosystem Registries > Locations and click the Location to open it.
Click the Manage boundaries icon button. The Boundaries panel lists the Location's boundaries.
Click + Add boundary and choose the Boundary type: Main boundary, Legal reserve, Buffer zone, Harvest area, Conservation area or Processing footprint.
Drag and drop or browse for your boundary file, check the preview and click Save.
A Location can have one boundary of each type. When every type has been added, the panel shows All boundary types have been added.
Each boundary in the list has a label: Added by you, Shared, Canonical or Public. A canonical boundary is a reference boundary and cannot be deleted. A boundary you cannot change shows Managed by another organisation.
Edit or remove a boundary
In Edit boundary, you replace the boundary's geometry by uploading a new file. The boundary type cannot be changed. To delete a boundary, click Remove and confirm. This cannot be undone.
Share a boundary
You can share only the boundaries you added. To share one:
Click Share on the boundary. The Manage sharing panel opens.
In Share with, search for and choose a related organisation.
If you want to tell people about it, add their email addresses or contacts under Notify people (optional).
Click Notify.
The panel lists each share with Shared with, Shared via (Direct or Automatic), Shared on and its state, Enabled or Disabled. Use Enable or Disable to turn a share on or off. Automatic shares were made through an Order or evidence, and you manage them there.
Note: The other organisation sees the boundary as a shared boundary on this Location. To see it through the Location registry, they need to add a relationship with the Location.
File requirements
Boundary files must meet these requirements:
Requirement | Detail |
Format | GeoJSON or JSON, or a CAR-formatted ZIP. |
Size | Up to 20 MB. |
Geometry | One or more Polygons or MultiPolygons. |
CAR is the Cadastro Ambiental Rural, Brazil's rural environmental registry.
Note: The boundary is sensitive map data. It is visible to the Location's owner and to the organisation that created the Location, and to organisations it has been shared with, for example through an Order. Other organisations that can see the Location see its address but not its boundary.
For the full Create New Location form, see How do I add a Location? For who can see a boundary, see Why can't I see another organisation's Location or its boundaries?
