How do I create a Product Template?

Create a Product Template in the Add Product Template panel: fill in the main fields, or show additional fields for the full form.

You create a Product Template to define the standard characteristics of a product variety so it can be traced and traded. You create one in the Add Product Template panel, in bulk via CSV, or through the API. Create templates only for products your Organisation owns.

Note: To add a template owned by a third party, raise a Support Request with the details and our team will help add it.

Open the Add Product Template panel

Go to Ecosystem Registries > Product Templates. The list has two tabs, each with a count: Our product templates, the templates your organisation owns, and Ecosystem product templates, the templates owned by your ecosystem. Click Add template to open the Add Product Template panel. To add many templates at once, click Bulk Upload via CSV instead.

Fill in the main fields

The Add Product Template panel opens with a short set of fields in its Identification section:

  • ID Type and ID: an identifier for the template, such as a GTIN or SKU.

  • Name: the template's name.

  • Visibility: who can see the template.

  • Country of Origin: where the product comes from.

  • HS Code (required): the Harmonised System code that classifies the product for trade.

  • Scientific Name: for biological products, the species. Linking the shared species record applies the related Family, Genus, Species and CITES appendix automatically, so you do not enter the CITES appendix separately. See What is the CITES appendix in OriginsNext?

Each Product Template has one species. The species list includes a range of plantation and tropical hardwood species.

Show additional fields for the full form

To see the full form, click Show additional fields. The panel expands to add:

  • + Add other Template ID: more identifiers for the template.

  • Parent Product Template: the template this one belongs under, if any.

  • Common Name, Brand Name and Sub-Brand Name.

  • Brand Owner (Own Organisation or External Organisation) and Manufacturer (Own Organisation, External Organisation or Unknown).

  • Description (use + Add/Edit Details) and a Product Template Image (180 x 135 px).

  • Harmonised system (HS) code classification and GS1 Classification (Segment, Family, Class, Brick), to classify the product for trade and grouping.

  • Uniclass Code and NATSPEC Classification (optional).

Save the template

Click Save and Close to save the Product Template, or Cancel to close the panel without saving. Your template then appears on the Our product templates tab, ready to use.

To view, search or edit templates afterwards, see How do I view, search and edit my Product Templates?
